Prof. Alejandro A. Franco awarded with an ERC Consolidator Grant: November 27, 2017

Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS) is awarded an ERC (European Research Council) Consolidator Grant, with his project called "ARTISTIC". This project, of a duration of 5 years and a budget close to 2 million euros, aims at developing and implementing an innovative multiscale computational platform for the simulation and optimization of lithium ion batteries fabrication processes.  Prof. Franco is one of the 329 researchers selected for the ERC Consolidator grants 2017

On November 8, 10 and 16, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is invited to be member and president of jury of several Comités de Suivi de Thèse (audition of PhD students aiming to register to the next year of their PhD): Rakesh Elango working in the field of battery electrodes (LRCS, Amiens, France), Clara Alkosseifi working on the coupling between phase field models and Navier-Stokes equations (LAMFA, Amiens, France), and Tatenda Nyazika, Aditya Rambogin, Devadas Bhat, Gabriel Bouobda, Romain Candela and Billy Clitton Nzogang, all of them working in the field of materials (Unité Matériaux et Transformations - UMET - CNRS UMR 8207, Université de Lille, Lille).

 

Prof. Alejandro A. Franco giving an invited lecture to promote science education in primary schools: November 9, 2017 (Amiens, France)

On November 9, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is giving an invited lecture in front of an audience of primary school teachers, on the topic of energy. The lecture is taking place in Amphitheatre Figlarz, at Université de Picardie Jules Verne, at 2 PM. Prof. Franco is invited by the ASTEP framework (within the Fondation La Main à la Pâte), which aims at promoting science education in the primary schools.

Promotional video recording by IFP School of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco's Virtual Reality tools for teaching: October 26, 2017 (Amiens, France)

On October 26, 2017, IFP School is coming to the HUB de l'énergie in Amiens, to record a promotional video of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco's virtual reality tools for teaching. The video will be part of a promotional video of IFP School teaching activities: Prof. Franco teaches in this school mathematical modeling of rechargeable batteries, and has used his virtual reality tools for the practices.

 

Prof. Alejandro A. Franco participating in the Atelier sur la Modélisation Multiéchelles des Matériaux pour l'Energie in the CNRS: October 16, 2017 (Paris, France)

On October 16, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS) is participating in the "Atelier sur la Modélisation Multiéchelles des Matériaux pour l'Energie" in the CNRS, Paris, France. Prof. Franco is invited by CNRS to participate in this workshop where one defines the roadmaps of scientific research in France for the incoming 10 to 20 years in the field of multiscale modeling of materials for energy applications. These discussions will define the future national project calls (e.g. by the French National Agency of Research, ANR).

 

Progress meeting of the European Project POROUS4APP: October 3-4, 2017 (York, United Kingdom)

On October 3 and 4, 2017, it is taking place the T18 progress meeting of the European H2020 Project "POROUS4APP". This project, being coordinated by LEITAT (Barcelona, Spain), is devoted to the development of a new generation of carbonaceous materials for a wide diversity of applications, including lithium ion batteries and chemical reactors. Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is coordinating the Work Package devoted to the computational modeling and is going to attend this meeting being organized in University of York, York, United Kingdom.

 

September 2017

Inaugural lecture of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco in the Master M.E.S.C. 2017: September 26, 2017 (Amiens, France) 

On September 26, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is delivering the inaugural lecture of his "Fuel Cells & Beyond" Lectures-Series within the Erasmus Master M.E.S.C. (Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion). The lectures provide a comprehensive critical review on fuel cells and other types of electrochemical energy devices, from both experimental and computational modeling viewpoints. The lectures are designed to estimulate the students' creativity, and are enriched with epistemological lessons, games, interactive practices. It implements a cutting-edge Virtual Reality environment to illustrate some of the teached concepts in an interactive way. Furthermore, this year includes the fith edition of the "Students Challenges" where the students are requested to solve technical problems in relation to the fascinating field of energy.

Inaugural lecture of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco in the Master on Multiscale Modeling of Materials: September 21, 2017 (Amiens, France)

On September 21, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS) is giving his inaugural lecture in the newly created Master on Applied Mathematics, speciality Multiscale Modeling of Materials, within the Université de Picardie Jules Verne (Amiens, France). In his lectures (12 hours in total) he covers theoretical and practical aspects of the multiscale computational modeling of electrochemical energy devices, such as lithium ion, lithium sulfur, lithium air, redow flow batteries, fuel cells and electrolyzers.

 

Progress meeting of the European Project "HELIS": September 14-15, 2017 (Masala, Finland)

On September 14 and 15, 2017, it is taking place in Masala, Finland, the progress meeting of the Horizon 2020 European Project "HELIS". This project leads with the development of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries for automotive applications. It is coordinated by Dr. Robert Dominko from National Institute of Chemistry in Slovenia. Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is attending this meeting as the leader of the Work Package on computational modeling.

On September 1, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS) is giving an invited seminar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in Cambridge, USA. The title of his seminar is "Computational Multiscale Modeling Of Rechargeable Batteries: Concepts And Practice". He is hosted by Prof. Yang Shao-Horn.  In his seminar Prof. Franco is going to present the most recent research progresses in his team regarding lithium ion, lithium sulfur, lithium air and redox flow batteries.

 

August 2017

Prof. Alejandro A. Franco giving an invited lecture at the International Society of Electrochemistry Annual Meeting: August 30, 2017 (Providence, USA)

On August 30, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS) is giving an invited lecture at the 68th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), taking place in Providence, USA. His lecture is entitled "Combining Multiscale Computational Modeling And Interactive Virtual Reality For Teaching Electrochemical Energy Storage".  Prof. Franco's lecture is within the Symposium 18 "Education For Electrochemistry And Electrochemical Engineering". Prof. Franco is also co-organizer of the Symposium 17 entitled "Advances In Theory And Modeling Of Electrochemical Systems".

His PhD students Caroline Gaya (project in collaboration with IRT Saint Exupery) and Mariem Maiza (project in collaboration with SAFT Batteries) are giving oral presentations on August 31, 2017, on the fields of modeling of lithium oxygen and lithium ion batteries respectively.

On August 26, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS) is giving an invited lecture at the WE-Heraeus Seminar "In operando characterization of energy materials", taking place in Bad Honnef, Germany.  His lecture is covering the latest progresses of his team at developing multiscale computational models for electrochemical energy storage devices (lithium oxygen, lithium sulfur, lithium ion and redox flow batteries).  The title of his lecture is "Catalyzing batteries innovation through multiscale computational modeling".

On August 23, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS) is giving an invited lecture at the International Materials Research Congress 2017 taking place in Cancun, Mexico on August 20-25, 2017. His lecture is entitled "Fostering technological breakthroughs in rechargeable batteries through multiscale computational modeling" and is scheduled within the Symposium "In situ/Operando and Computational Studies of Electrochemical Energy Materials".

Scientific Days and talk of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco: July 19 and 20, 2017 (Amiens, France)

On July 19 and 20, 2017, they are taking place the "Scientific Days", LRCS internal traditional conference when students and postdocs present their latest progresses in the battery research field. Permanent researchers and professors can also present on a volonteer basis. Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is giving a talk entitled "Fantastic Voyage: From Fiction To Virtuality & From Virtuality to Reality" where he is going to review his team latest progress on the use of Virtual Reality to support the R&D in rechargeable batteries.

On July 18, 2017, Prof. Martin Bazant from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is giving an invited seminar at LRCS (Energy HUB, Amiens, France) entitled: "Control of Phase Transformations in Rechargeable Batteries". Prof. Bazant is hosted by Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS): they had some scientific collaboration in the past, in the field of electrochemical double layers in fuel cells.

Franco (LRCS) is giving an invited lecture at the 3rd International Forum on Progress and Trends in Battery and Capacitor Technologies, Power our Future 2017, which is taking place in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, on July 2-5, 2017. His lecture is entitled "Dealing with one gogol of batteries: multiscale modeling to the rescue of design and optimization".

 

Arrival of of Dr. Jorge Vazquez Arenas at LRCS:  July 3, 2017 (Amiens, France)

Dr. Jorge Vazquez Arenas (Universidad Autonoma de Mexico) is arriving to LRCS (Amiens) on July 3, 2017, for a visiting professor position of three weeks. Dr. Vazquez Arenas is being hosted by Prof. Alejandro A. Franco with who he develops scientific collaborations in the field of multiscale modeling of fuel cells and batteries. Dr. Vazquez Arenas is supported with a grant provided by the Master Programme on Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion (MESC).

 

June 2017

Habilitation defence of Dr. Frederic Labat at Chimie ParisTech: June 16, 2017 (Paris, France)

On June 16, 2017, it is taking place the Habilitation (HDR) defence of Dr. Frederic Labat at Chimie ParisTech engineering school. The title of his HDR thesis is "DFT Modeling of Complex Interfaces in Energy-Based Devices: from Sensitized Solar Cells to Solid Oxide Fuel Cells". Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS) is referee ("rapporteur") of his HDR thesis and member of the defence jury.

 

Yinghui Yin giving an oral presentation at LRCS: June 15, 2017 (Amiens, France)

On June 15, 2017, Yinghui Yin (PhD student of Prof. A.A. Franco) is giving an oral presentation on the state of the art of experimental approaches and computational modeling of lithium air batteries. Her presentation is within the context of a presentation-series organized for third-year PhD students at LRCS, Amiens, France. Yinghui has presented her PhD work in multiple international events and conferences, including at ICTP (Trieste, 2015 and 2016), ISE Annual Meetings (Taipei, 2015 and Buenos Aires, 2017) and ECS Meetings (New Orleans, 2017).

Yinghui Yin and Garima Shukla, PhD students under the supervision of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS), are giving oral presentations at the 231st Electrochemical Society (ECS) Meeting, in New Orleans, USA (May 28 - June 1, 2017). Yinghui is giving two talks: one on May 28, 2017 on the kinetic Monte Carlo modeling of the Oxygen Reduction Reaction mechanisms in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries and one on June 1, 2017, on the modeling and experimental characterization of the recharge mechanisms of Lithium-Oxygen Batteries. Garima is giving her talk on May 30, 2017, on the kinetic Monte Carlo modeling of slurry Redox Flow Batteries

On May 17, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS) is giving an invited talk at the Pint of Science festival, in Amiens, France. Pint of Science is an international festival bringing scientists to local pubs to discuss their latest discoveries.  The title of his talk is "May The Force Be With You", where he revisits the concept of "energy" in physics, through pedagogic and highly interactive presentation materials. Within his talk, Prof. Franco is going to use his Virtual Reality tool for teaching electrochemical energy storage devices, recently developed and used by him within the Master MESC

On March 20, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco (LRCS) is delivering an invited lecture (30 minutes-invited talk) at the 20th Topical Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina (March 19-22, 2017). Prof. Franco's lecture title is "Mesostructure-performance relationships in rechargeable batteries: challenging the dogma with multiscale computations and immersive visualization",  where he is going to review the most recent achievements of his team on the multiscale modeling of Li-O2, Li-S and Redox Flow Batteries.

 

Furthermore, Yinghui Yin, PhD student supervised by Prof. Alejandro A. Franco, is going to deliver an oral presentation of her work on modeling of charge mechanisms in Lithium Oxygen Batteries.

 

Biannual meeting of the French Network on Electrochemical Energy Storage (RS2E): March 14-15, 2017 (Amiens, France)

On March 14 and 15, 2017, it is taking place the biannual meeting of the French Network on Electrochemical Energy Storage (RS2E). The meeting is organized in the Energy HUB (hosting the LRCS) in Amiens, France. In the meeting,  Yinghui Yin, PhD student supervised by Prof. Alejandro A. Franco, is going to deliver an oral presentation about her latest research on multiscale modeling of Lithium-Oxygen Batteries. 

 

Visit and invited seminar of Prof. Takashi Tokumasu: March 13, 2017 (Amiens, France)

On March 13, 2017 at 11:00 AM, Prof. Takashi Tokumasu (Tohoku University, Japan) is delivering at LRCS an invited seminar entitled "Large scale molecular simulations for transport phenomena in polymer electrolyte fuel cells". Prof. Tokumasu is also visiting Prof. Alejandro A. Franco for discussing collaborative research topics.

Progress meeting of the European project "POROUS4APP": February 27-28, 2017 (Zurich, Switzerland)

On February 27-28, 2017, it is taking place in Zurich, Switzerland, the progress meeting of the Horizon 2020 European Project "POROUS4APP". This project, being coordinated by LEITAT (Barcelona, Spain), is devoted to the development of a new generation of carbonaceous materials for a wide diversity of applications, including lithium ion batteries and chemical reactors. Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is coordinating the Work Package devoted to the computational modeling and is going to attend this meeting.

On February 16 and 17, 2017, it is taking place in Barcelona, Spain, the progress meeting of the Horizon 2020 European Project "HELIS". Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is attending this meeting as the leader of the Work Package on computational modeling.

 

Arrival of Dr. Alain Ngandjong to LRCS: February 13, 2017 (Amiens, France)

On February 13, 2017, Dr. Alain Ngandjong is arriving to LRCS to work as a postdoctoral researcher under the supervision of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco. His research topic is the multiscale modeling of lithium ion batteries.

On February 10, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is delivering an invited lecture at the ARI Picardie (Picardie Regional Agency for Innovation) within the event "Témoignages sur la résolution de problèmes industriels par les Mathématiques Appliquées". Prof. Franco's lecture is entitled "La modélisation mathématique comme vecteur d'innovation dans le stockage de l'énergie", where he is going to discuss the role mathematical modeling plays nowadays to design, optimize and innovate in the field of rechargeable batteries. 

 

Three MSc. students joining the team of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco at LRCS: February 6, 2017 (Amiens, France)

On February 6, 2017, three MSc. students are joining Prof. Alejandro A. Franco's team:  Adelphe Mastiegui, Kush Chadha and Marouan Handa. Adelphe will work on the modeling of electrochemical reactions in cycling Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, within the context of the European Project HELIS. Kush and Marouan (the latter co-supervised with Dr. Youcef Mammeri from the LAMFA laboratory on mathematics) will work on the modeling of Redox Flow Batteries within the context of the Region project WONDERFUL coordinated by Prof. Franco. Welcome guys !

On January 30, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is delivering an invited lecture at the Seminar-Series on Applied Analysis organized at the Laboratoire Amiénois de Mathématique Fondamentale et Appliquée (LAMFA) (mixed research lab between Université de Picardie Jules Verne and CNRS) in Amiens, France.  The title of his lecture is "Multiscale Simulation Approaches for the Electrochemical Conversion and Storage of Energy".

On January 17-18, 2017, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is attending the kick-off meeting on Materials Modelling terminology, classification and metadaat, in Brussels, Belgium. Prof. Franco is involved in the an Advisory Group on Interoperability and Repositories within the European Materials Modeling Council.

 

Invited tutorial on mathematical modeling of lithium ion batteries within the IFPEN School, Master "Electrification and Automotive Propulsion": January 11, 2017 (Rueil-Malmaison, France)

On January 11, 2017, Prof. A.A. Franco (LRCS, Amiens) delivers an invited tutorial at the IFP School (Rueil-Malmaison, France) within the Master program "EPA" (Vehicles and Sustainable Transport), Speciality on Electrification and Automotive Propulsion. His course is on physical modeling and numerical simulation of lithium ion batteries for automotive applications: the chemistry and the physics behind the operation principles of these batteries are revisited, and practical methods for the implementation of mathematical models in scientific software such as Matlab and Simulink are presented. Furthermore, emerging multiscale modeling techniques, bridging the gap between mechanisms at the atomistic scale and the whole cell behavior, are also discussed. The tutorial includes some demonstrations of the in-house computational software MS LIBER-T being developed at LRCS, and since this year Prof. Franco is using his immersive Virtual Reality software (previously used by him within the Master MESC) for teaching the operation principles of batteries.

Biannual Meeting of the Alistore European Research Institute: December 13 and 14, 2016 (Warsaw, Poland)

On December 13 and 14, 2016, it is taking place in Warsaw, Poland, the biannual meeting of the Alistore European Research Institute, an institute of excellence bringing together academic laboratories and industry in the field of rechargeable batteries. In this meeting Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is chairing the Theory Platform Session (he is the responsible of this platform since December 2015) and is delivering two talks: one on multiscale modeling of Li-O2 batteries (PhD thesis topic of his student Amangeldi Torayev) and one on the use of Virtual Reality for teaching purposes. His PhD student Vignesh Thangavel is also presenting on his latest work on modeling of Li-sulfur batteries. 

 

Presentation of the Challenges' solutions by the Master M.E.S.C. students: December 9, 2016 (Amiens, France) 

On December 9, 2016, it is taking place the last lecture of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco's lecture-series "Fuel Cells & Beyond" for the year 2016. This lecture-series is given by Prof. Franco since 2013 within the Master on Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion (M.E.S.C.) programme at Université de Picardie Jules Verne (Amiens, France). In his lecture-series Prof. Franco implements innovative teaching methods, including games, interactive exercises, and since 2016, practice tools using Virtual Reality software and hardware. In this final lecture, the students are presenting their solutions to the challenges proposed by Prof. Franco in his inaugural lecture of last October. Fantastic presentations by the students are expected !

HCERES evaluation of the LRCS: November 15-16, 2016 (Amiens, France)

On November 15 and 16, 2016, it is taking place in Amiens the HCERES evaluation of the Laboratoire de Réactivité et Chimie des Solides (LRCS). HCERES stands for Haut Conseil de l'Evaluation de la Recherche et de l'Enseignement Supérieur,  and it is in charge of evaluation the research scientific activities of the french laboratories as well as the teaching activities at the universities. During the visit of the HCERES committee, several LRCS members, including the laboratory director, Dr. Mathieu Morcrette, are presenting the research activities carried out at LRCS in the last 5 years.   Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is in charge of presenting the research activities carried out at LRCS in the field of computational modeling, as well as the  research perspectives for the next 5 years. Prof. Franco is the coordinator of the Research Area "Modeling: from materials to electrochemical systems" at LRCS.

On November 6 to 9, 2016, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is participating at the Energy Storage Discussions 2016, taking place in Amealco, Mexico. Prof. Franco is delivering an invited keynote in this conference. Furthermore, on November 10 and 11, Prof. Franco is delivering an invited seminar-series at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico, in Mexico City. His presentations review the most recent updates of his ongoing researches in the field of electrochemical energy storage and conversion.

 

Visit & Seminar of Dr. Atsushi Ohma (Nissan Motor, Japan): November 4, 2016 (Amiens, France) 

On November 4, 2016, Dr. Atsushi Ohma, manager at Nissan Motor, Japan, and Associated Professor at Yamanashi University, Japan, is visiting LRCS and Prof. Alejandro A. Franco. Dr. Ohma and Prof. Franco worked together in a 3-years project some years ago, within the field of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Dr. Ohma is delivering an invited seminar the same day at 11 AM (Amphi Fligarz, Université de Picardie Jules Verne, Amiens): the topic of his seminar is "Future Mobility and FCEV development at Nissan".

Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is distinguished as a junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF). This recognizes the quality of his scientific research in the field of modeling of electrochemical energy devices. His position is effective since October 1, 2016, and for five years. As a member of the IUF, he benefits of a reduction of 2/3 of his statutory teaching service, of funding for his research activities and of the national award of scientific excellence. The ceremonie d'installation is taking place on October 24, 2016, between 10 AM to 2 PM at the Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris, France). 

 

European Project "HELIS" Progress Meeting: October 13-14, 2016 (Bled, Slovenia) 

On October 13 and 14, 2016, it is taking place in Bled, Slovenia, the progress meeting of the Horizon 2020 European Project "HELIS". This project leads with the development of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries for automotive applications. It is coordinated by Dr. Robert Dominko from National Institute of Chemistry in Slovenia. Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is leading the Work Package on computational modeling, and will attend this meeting.

 

Introduction of the use of Immersive Virtual Reality tools for the practices within Prof. A.A. Franco's lectures-series "Fuel Cells & Beyond" (Master M.E.S.C.): October 12, 2016 (Amiens, France)

On October 12, 2016 (from 2 PM to 4 PM, in Salle des Theses, Université Picardie Jules Verne, Amiens, France) Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is introducing a novel method of teaching: the use of immersive Virtual Reality for his practices within his lectures-series "Fuel Cells & Beyond" in the Erasmus Master Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion (M.E.S.C.). He is using cutting-edge software and hardware to bring M.E.S.C. students to another dimension...Prof. Franco works very closely on this with the Université de Technologie de Compiègne and the company Reviatech, within the project MASTERS funded by the Region Hauts de France and the FEDER. A paper by Prof. Franco on this will be published soon.

Furthermore, this semester Prof. Franco is supervising two "M.E.S.C. Class 12" students for labworks on the topics of Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of batteries and Redox Flow Batteries: Diego Del Olmo Diaz and Yih-Chyng Wu. Welcome to LRCS guys!

 

National Project "CELIA" Progress Meeting: October 6, 2016 (Amiens, France)

On October 6, 2016, it is taking place at LRCS (Amiens, France) the Progress Meeting of the National Project "CELIA" coordinated by the Institute of Technology Saint Exupéry (IRT Saint Exupéry).  This project includes a Work Package devoted to the design, development, characterization and computational modeling of Lithium-Air Batteries for aircraft applications. Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is involved in this project as the supervisor of the PhD student Caroline Gaya working on these aspects.

 

Arrival of Alexis Rucci for a postdoctoral research position (EU Project POROUS4APP): October 3, 2016 (Amiens, France) 

On October 3, 2016, Dr. Alexis Rucci arrives to LRCS, Amiens, France, to work as postdoctoral researcher under the supervision of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco. Dr. Rucci, who is originally from Argentina, will work on the three-dimensional computational modeling of lithium ion batteries and catalytic reactors, within the Horizon 2020 European Project "POROUS4APP" coordinated by LEITAT (Barcelona, Spain) and involving severa europeanl academic and industrial laboratories, such as Varta and Johnson Matthey. Public PhD defence of Jelle Smekens (Vrije Universiteit Brussel): September 29, 2016 (Brussels, Belgium).

On September 29, 2016, it is taking place the public PhD defence of Jelle Smekens at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The title of the PhD is "Modeling Techiques for optimization of lithium-ion batteries". Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is member of the jury and is attending the public defence: on last June 27 he has attended the private defence as jury member as well.

 

Master M.E.S.C. Prof. A.A. Franco's "Fuel Cells & Beyond" Lectures-Series, 2016 inaugural lecture: September 27, 2016 (Amiens, France)

On September 27, 2016, Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is delivering the inaugural lecture of his "Fuel Cells & Beyond" Lectures-Series within the Erasmus Master M.E.S.C. (Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion). The lectures provide a comprehensive critical review on fuel cells and other types of electrochemical energy devices, from both experimental and computational modeling viewpoints. The lectures are designed to estimulate the students' creativity, and are enriched with epistemological lessons, games, interactive practices. Since this year it implements a cutting-edge Virtual Reality environment to illustrate some of the teached concepts in an interactive way. Furthermore, the fourth edition of the "Students Challenges" where the students are requested to solve atypical technical problems in relation to the fascinating field of energy.

   

LRCS visit of Riko Moroni (University of Freiburg, Germany): September 26-28, 2016 (Amiens, France)

On September 26-28, 2016, Riko Moroni, PhD candidate at Dr. Simon Thiele's group at IMTEK, University of Freiburg, is visiting Prof. Alejandro A. Franco and the LRCS for a scientific collaboration in the field of electrochemical energy devices. On September 27, Riko Moroni is giving a seminar on their ongoing activities on microstructural characterization of porous electrodes for energy applications.

Progress Meeting of the EU Project "POROUS4APP": September 12-13, 2016 (Barcelona, Spain)

On September 12 and 13, 2016, it is taking place the T6 progress meeting of the European H2020 Project "POROUS4APP". This project, being coordinated by LEITAT (Barcelona, Spain), is devoted to the development of a new generation of carbonaceous materials for a wide diversity of applications, including lithium ion batteries and chemical reactors. Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is coordinating the Work Package devoted to the computational modeling and is going to attend the first day of the meeting being organized in Barcelona, Spain.

LRCS Scientific Days: July 20-21, 2016 (Amiens, France)

 "LRCS Scientific Days" are taking place on July 20-21, 2016, at LRCS, Amiens. This is an internal conference where all the laboratory students and postdocs present their latest research results. Permanent staff can also deliver presentations, for instance on prospective topics. All MSc. and PhD students and postdocs working with Prof. A.A. Franco are presenting their latest work on the modeling and the experimental characterization of the next generation of rechargeable batteries, such as lithium-sulfur, lithium-air and redox flow batteries. On May 30, 2016, Prof. A.A. Franco is giving an invited Keynote Lecture at the 229th Meeting of the Electrochemical Society (San Diego, USA). The title of his lecture is "Multiscale Three-Dimensional Modeling to the Rescue of Electrochemical Energy Devices", where he is going to review the most recent progresses of his team on the development of multi-scale models for electrochemical energy devices, such as redox flow, lithium-air and lithium-sulfur batteries, and to discuss the synergies with experimental characterizations.

Progress meeting of the European Project "HELIS": April 19-20, 2016 (Münster, Germany)

On April 19 and 20, 2016, it is taking place the T12 progress meeting of the European Project on HELIS. The project, lead by the National Institute of Chemistry of Slovenia, is devoted to the development of Li-S battery prototypes for automotive applications. Prof. A.A. Franco is involved as the Modeling Work Package leader and is attending this meeting together with his involved postdoc (Matias Quiroga), PhD student (Vignesh Thangavel) and his colleagues from LRCS. The meeting is hosted by the Münster Electrochemical Energy Technology Institute.

Kickoff meeting of the European Project "POROUS4APP": March 30-31, 2016 (Brussels, Belgium)

On March 30 and 31, 2016, it is taking place the kickoff meeting of the European Project "POROUS4APP" (Horizon 2020 Programme). The meeting is taking place in Brussels. The project, lead by the technological center LEITAT and involving top class academic and industrial laboratories, is devoted to the design, fabrication and characterization of innovative carbonaceous materials for application in lithium ion batteries and chemical reactors. Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is involved in this project as the Leader of the Work Package addressing the physical modeling-based optimization of these materials and devices.

On March 4, 2016, Aoxiang Geng is arriving to the LRCS (Amiens) to carry out his MSc. thesis project under the supervision of Prof. Alejandro A. Arrival of Amangeldi Torayev for a PhD thesis at LRCS: February 15, 2016 (Amiens, France)

On February 15, 2016, Amangeldi Torayev is arriving at LRCS to start a PhD thesis under the supervision of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco and Prof. Clare Grey from University of Cambridge. Amangeldi is goign to work on the topic of lithium-air and lithium-sulfur batteries by combining both multi-scale modeling tools and experimental characterizations (electrochemistry, NMR). Inaugural Prof. Franco's UPJV Doctoral School 2016 Lecture Series on Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics: February 10, 2016 (Amiens, France)

On February 10, 2016, Prof. A.A. Franco (LRCS, Amiens) starts the 2016 edition of his multidisciplinary Université de Picardie Jules Verne Doctoral School Lecture Series on Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics Theory. This Lecture Series aims to teach the PhD students on how to use this powerful theory in their day-by-day scientific work to describe, analyze, understand and predict a large diversity of mechanisms in multiple disciplines, such as physicochemistry, biology and astrophysics. Within a highly interactive and comprehensive approach, including games and quizzes, the lectures aim stimulating the students to think "out of the box" and to develop their creativity within a transversal view of sciences. Prof. A.A. Franco's lectures are enriched with epistemological concepts and practical application exercises, including numerical simulations on cases of interest for the students' PhD thesis. The lecture series includes in particular an introduction to the concepts, formalisms and applications of both first order and high order non-equilibrium thermodynamics, fractal geometry and chaos theory.

This year, the lecture-series includes some practice on the use of the Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics theory to estimate the probabilities of finding life in exoplanets.

Publication of the book Physical Multiscale Modeling and Numerical Simulation of Electrochemical Devices for Energy Conversion and Storage (Springer): January, 2016

The book edited by Prof. Alejandro A. Franco, Dr. Marie-Liesse Doublet and Prof. Wolfgang Bessler on multiscale modeling of electrochemical devices has been published very recently in Springer. The title of the book is "Physical Multiscale Modeling and Numerical Simulation of Electrochemical Devices for Energy Conversion and Storage". Through multiple comprehensive chapters, it reviews modeling methods at multiple scales for the simulation of structural, transport and electrochemical properties of fuel cells, supercapacitors and batteries. Invited tutorial on mathematical modeling of lithium ion batteries within the IFPEN School, Master "Electrification and Automotive Propulsion": January 13, 2016 (Rueil-Malmaison, France)

On January 13, 2016, Prof. A.A. Franco (LRCS, Amiens) delivers an invited tutorial at the IFP School (Rueil-Malmaison, France) within the Master program "EPA" (Vehicles and Sustainable Transport), Speciality on Electrification and Automotive Propulsion. His course is on physical modeling and numerical simulation of lithium ion batteries for automotive applications: the chemistry and the physics behind the operation principles of these batteries are revisited, and practical methods for the implementation of mathematical models in scientific software such as Matlab and Simulink are presented. Furthermore, emerging multiscale modeling techniques, bridging the gap between mechanisms at the atomistic scale and the whole cell behavior, are also discussed. The tutorial includes some demonstrations of the in-house computational software MS LIBER-T being developed at LRCS. 

 

Dr. Charles Delacourt's HDR defence: January 12, 2016 (Amiens, France)

On January 12, 2016, Dr. Charles Delacourt (LRCS) is defending his Habilitation (H.D.R.) at Université Picardie Jules Verne (Figlarz Auditorium, Amiens, France). The title of his HDR is "Mathematical Modeling as a tool for performance and aging analysis of Li-ion batteries" and Prof. Alejandro A. Franco is participating in his HDR defence as one of the examiners (jury board).  

 

Arrival of Caroline Gaya (PhD student): January 4, 2016 (Amiens, France)

On January 4, 2016, Caroline Gaya is arriving at LRCS to start a PhD thesis project under the supervision of Prof. Alejandro A. Franco and Dr. Mathieu Morcrette (LRCS). Her thesis is on the design, characterization and modeling of lithium air batteries for aircraft applications, in collaboration with IRT Saint Exupery
